If you're going to China to study, you need a student visa — either X1 (for programs longer than six months) or X2 (for programs of six months or less). Both are built around two documents your school provides.
X1 — long-term study, more than six months. After you arrive, you convert it to a study-type residence permit for the length of your program.
X2 — short-term study, six months or less. Usually single-entry, valid up to six months, with no residence permit needed.
An admission letter from a recognized Chinese educational institution
A JW201 or JW202 form from that institution — JW201 if you're on a Chinese government scholarship, JW202 if you're self-funded
A passport valid for at least six more months, with a blank page
A recent white-background photo and your COVA application
X1 students must obtain a study residence permit at the local Exit-Entry Administration, usually within 30 days of arrival — your school's international office typically walks you through it.
Once your school sends your admission letter and JW form, we complete the COVA application and submit your passport in person at your consulate. Start your application or compare all visa types.
