Every business day a Chinese visa office is closed is a day your passport sits in a tray. Processing is quoted in business days — typically 4 for regular service — so a holiday in the middle of your application quietly pushes everything back. For 2026, the five Chinese visa offices in the U.S. have each published their closure schedule in a separate notice (Chicago's, delightfully, only as a photo of a table). We've pulled all five together, verified the dates against each office's own notice, and decoded the one real difference between them.

The offices close for both U.S. federal holidays and Chinese public holidays — which is why this list is longer than any American office's. Here is every published closure for 2026:

Most closures cost you a single day. Two windows cost you most of a week — and they're the ones to plan around:
Spring Festival — February 16–18. Monday through Wednesday, right after a weekend: the offices go dark from Saturday, February 14 through Wednesday, February 18. Three business days gone in one bite. (In 2026, Presidents Day falls inside this window, so it costs nothing extra.)
Golden Week — October 1–5, plus October 12. Thursday, October 1 through Monday, October 5 removes three more business days, and four of the five offices also close the following Monday for Columbus Day. Early October is the single worst stretch of the year to have an application in flight.
If you're traveling in late February or early March, aim to have your application submitted by late January. Traveling in mid-to-late October? Get it in by early September. Those buffers cover the closures plus normal processing — and leave room for the unexpected, since the consulates control processing times, not anyone else.
Here's the one real difference between the five notices: the New York consulate lists only 9 closures, while Washington, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles each list 13. New York stays open on MLK Day, Memorial Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day.
Before you get excited: you can't shop between offices. Your application goes to the office assigned to your state of residence — see which consulate covers your state. New York's shorter list only helps you if you already apply through New York. What it does mean: NYC-jurisdiction applicants (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and neighbors) lose four fewer processing days a year than everyone else.
Count in business days, not calendar days. Regular service is quoted at about 4 business days from passport submission — a holiday inside that window extends it.
Remember both calendars. It's easy to plan around Thanksgiving and forget Dragon Boat Festival. The offices observe both.
Build in a buffer. The notices themselves say schedules can change, and processing times are averages, not commitments. Two spare weeks costs nothing; a missed flight does.
Cutting it close? Express service exists (about 3 business days), and our rush China visa guide covers what's realistic when a holiday is in the way.
