Renewing an international passport can feel like deciphering an ancient scroll — and if you're a Brazilian citizen living in the United States, the paperwork trail gets tricky fast. Between digital portals, voter credentials, and military-draft rules, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Here's the step-by-step, plus the "hidden" gaps that quietly cause most of the delays.

Step 1: The e-Consular portal (your digital gatekeeper)

Gone are the days of walking into a consulate with a stack of papers. Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs a centralized platform called e-Consular. Before you mail anything or book an appointment, you must:

  1. Log into the e-Consular portal for your regional jurisdiction (Chicago, Miami, New York, and so on).

  2. Fill out the application and upload clear photos or scans of every required document.

  3. Wait for consular staff to review and validate your digital file.

⚠️ Don't mail documents or travel to the office until you get the official "Approved" email. Showing up without an approved appointment means you won't be seen.

Step 2: Your core document toolkit

The Brazilian government requires original documents for final processing — photocopies are one of the most common reasons an application gets rejected. Have these in hand:

  • The RER receipt — after the online request, the system generates a Recibo de Entrega de Requerimento (RER). Print it and sign it.

  • A physical passport photo — a standard 2×2 inch US passport photo, taken within the last 6 months, plain white background, on photo paper. Glue it onto the printed RER. (Need one done right? See our US passport photo requirements guide.)

  • Proof of citizenship — your original Brazilian birth certificate (or marriage certificate if you've had a legal name change).

  • Your most recent Brazilian passport.

Step 3: The "hidden" gaps (tax ID, voter, and military rules)

This is where applicants get stuck. A Brazilian passport renewal is tied to your status across other federal databases:

1. Voter clearance (Quitação Eleitoral). Brazilians aged 18–70 must keep an active voter status, even abroad. Pull a Voter Clearance Certificate from the TSE to prove you've voted or formally justified your absences. If your status is compromised, regularize it via Título Net before the passport can print.

2. The military draft (men aged 18–45). Every male citizen over 18 must present an original military document. If you moved to the US as a child and never registered, you'll need a first-time Certificado de Alistamento Militar (CAM) for an automatic postponement of service.

3. The CPF tax ID. A valid CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) is now required on passport applications. Any gaps in your CPF status need to be fixed during the application.

Step 4: Pay the government fee

The consulate does not accept cash, personal checks, or credit cards.

  • Fee: $60.00 USD for adults (18 and older).

  • Method: a USPS Postal Money Order made out to your consulate. Money orders from grocery stores or commercial banks are rejected.

Step 5: Submission — mail vs. in person

Once e-Consular approves your uploads, you have two routes:

Mail-in — best for straightforward renewals with no missing documents. Send your originals with a prepaid, self-addressed USPS Priority/Express return envelope. Usually 15 business days or longer once received.

In-person appointment — best for complex cases (first-time adult CPF, military registration) or urgent travel. Show up at your scheduled time with your originals. Often processed the same day or within a short window.
