You don't have to be a U.S. citizen to get a China visa in the United States. Green card holders and other foreign nationals living here apply at the same Chinese consulates — but there are a few extra wrinkles, and one that surprises almost everyone: your visa depends on your passport, not your green card. Here's exactly how it works.

Yes — you can apply in the U.S. as a legal resident

If you live in the United States legally, you apply for your China visa at the Chinese consulate that covers your state, the same as a U.S. citizen. You don't route it through your own country's embassy — you apply where you live. What you do have to show is proof of your legal U.S. residence.

Non-citizen applications have a few extra wrinkles, which is exactly where a good expediter earns its fee. Here’s how to pick a China visa service in the USA that knows those cases.

What counts as proof of U.S. residence

According to the Chinese Embassy, non-U.S. citizens must include a photocopy of one of these to prove legal residence in the U.S.:

Invitation rules apply to non-citizens the same way: if a person or company in China is hosting you, you’ll need a China visa invitation letter that matches your application details.

Your green card (permanent resident card)
A valid U.S. visa
An I-20 (for students)
An I-94 (arrival/departure record)

And you must apply in the consulate jurisdiction where you actually live — send it to the wrong one and it comes right back.

Your visa validity depends on your passport — not your green card

This is the part that trips people up. The 10-year multiple-entry visa that U.S. citizens receive comes from the U.S.-China reciprocity agreement, and it applies to U.S. passport holders. As a green card holder traveling on a non-U.S. passport, your visa's validity and number of entries follow China's arrangement with your passport's country — which is often shorter, and frequently a single- or double-entry visa rather than a 10-year one.

Put simply: your green card lets you apply here; your passport determines what you get. When you apply with us, we tell you what your specific nationality typically receives, so there are no surprises at the window.

If you were born in China or are a former Chinese citizen

There's an extra step for applicants of Chinese origin. Per the Chinese Embassy, if this is your first Chinese visa since you naturalized as a foreign citizen, you must upload:

The bio page of your former Chinese passport, and
Your naturalization certificate.

If your name has changed, include the name-change document as well. These requirements catch a lot of former Chinese nationals off guard — and missing them means a rejected application.

The rest is the same two-step process

Beyond those extras, the process is identical to any China visa: you complete the online COVA application, then your passport is submitted in person at your consulate — mainland China does not accept mailed applications from individuals. That's the part we handle for you.
