Respuesta rápida: «Preliminary review in progress» (revisión preliminar en curso) es el estado normal y es donde se encuentra la mayoría de las solicitudes; no ocurre nada malo. COVA tiene diecisiete estados posibles y casi no explica ninguno. Solo «Passport to be submitted» (pasaporte por presentar) exige que usted haga algo. No inicie una segunda solicitud mientras haya una abierta: la duplicada bloquea la primera.
Si su solicitud de visa china está detenida en un estado que no reconoce, esta página lo descifra. COVA — el portal China Online Visa Application (Solicitud de Visa en Línea de China) en consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA — tiene diecisiete estados posibles y no explica casi ninguno. Significa que un funcionario consular tiene su solicitud en la cola y todavía no la ha revisado. No hay posición en la cola, ni estimación, ni correo cuando avanza. Ese silencio es lo que angustia a la gente, no la espera en sí.

Es el que la gente pasa por alto, y pasarlo por alto cuesta días. Todo hasta aquí es en línea. Cuando el estado cambia a Passport to be submitted (pasaporte por entregar), la parte en línea terminó y el consulado está esperando el pasaporte físico — en persona. No lo aceptan por correo de particulares, y la solicitud no avanza hasta que el pasaporte esté físicamente allí.
Nada se lo avisa. No hay correo. Si no está mirando el portal, una solicitud ya aprobada puede quedarse esperando una semana porque nadie notó que la etiqueta cambió. Debe llevarse al consulado que atiende a su estado.
Diecisiete estados suena alarmante. En la práctica no lo es, y esta es la parte que nadie más puede contarle — hace falta presentar solicitudes a diario ante varios consulados para saber qué etiquetas son reales y cuáles son teóricas.
En las solicitudes que seguimos actualmente, solo seis de los diecisiete llegan a aparecer. La inmensa mayoría se concentra en solo dos — passport to be submitted y finished — y preliminary review in progress explica casi todo el resto.
Los que suenan aterradores son los que menos probabilidad tiene de encontrarse. Nunca hemos visto un estado de videoentrevista en una solicitud estadounidense de turismo o negocios. Review failed, los fallos de pago y canceled en la práctica no ocurren. Rejected and to be modified — hay que corregir un campo. Tiene solución, pero solo cuando usted reenvíe.
Passport to be submitted — pasó la revisión y están esperando el pasaporte físico.
Si no revisa el portal con regularidad, aquí es donde las solicitudes pierden una semana en silencio.

COVA se reconstruyó el 30 de septiembre de 2025. Los estados de arriba son producto de ese cambio — el sistema antiguo no tenía un seguimiento real. Con el portal anterior usted llenaba un formulario, lo imprimía, se presentaba en el consulado con su pasaporte y solo entonces descubría si faltaba algo.
El portal nuevo añade una cuenta, el envío totalmente en línea con carga de documentos y — lo importante — una revisión que ocurre antes de que usted viaje al consulado. Por eso el estado importa ahora: es la diferencia entre un viaje perdido y uno programado.
Hay un documento fácil de pasar por alto. La actualización introdujo la Visa Application Statement (declaración de solicitud de visa), que absorbe el antiguo formulario "Where You Stay" y añade su jurisdicción, su historial de visas chinas y sus motivos y vínculos con EE. UU. No es obvio dónde encontrarla en el portal, así que aquí tiene una copia directa: formulario China Visa Application Statement.
