China Work Visa (Z) (2026): Work Permit, Requirements & Process

The China work (Z) visa is for full-time employment with a China-based employer. It starts with a work-permit notification and converts to a residence permit after you arrive. Here is the process.

The work visa (Z) is for taking a full-time job with an employer based in China. It's the most document-heavy category, because it's really the front door to living and working in China — the Z visa gets you in, and a work-type residence permit (arranged after you arrive) lets you stay.

How the Z visa process works

Your employer starts it. Before you can apply, your China-based employer obtains a Work Permit Notification (or talent-channel documents) for you.
You apply for the Z visa with that notification, your passport, photo, and COVA application. It's typically issued as a single-entry visa.
You enter China, then apply for a work-type residence permit at the local Exit-Entry Administration — usually within 30 days of arrival.

What you need

The Work Permit Notification from your employer (the key document)
A passport valid for at least six more months, with a blank page
A recent white-background photo
Your completed COVA application

How to apply

Once your employer provides the notification, we complete the COVA application and submit your passport in person at your consulate. Start your application or compare all visa types.
