Quick answer: A layover can be visa-free, but a round trip cannot. Since December 2024, U.S. passport holders can transit China visa-free for up to 240 hours — but only travelling from one country onward to a different third country, with a confirmed onward ticket, through one of 60 eligible ports. If China is your destination and you fly home afterwards, that is not a transit and you need a visa.
"Do I need a visa just for a layover in China?" It's one of the most confusing travel questions for American travelers — and the answer shifted in December 2024, when China replaced the old 72- and 144-hour windows with a single 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit. U.S. passport holders qualify — the U.S. is one of the 55 eligible countries — but only under strict conditions that most trips to China don't actually meet. Here's how it works for U.S. citizens in 2026, and when you still need a regular visa.

Eligible travelers — including U.S. citizens — can transit visa-free for up to 240 hours (10 days), long enough to actually explore. But the conditions are firm:
You must travel Country A → China → Country B, where B is different from A. (Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan count as separate regions, so US → Beijing → Hong Kong qualifies.)
You need an onward ticket with a confirmed date and seat to that third country, departing within 240 hours — the official wording is "interline tickets with confirmed dates and seats," so a vague "I'll book it later" plan doesn't qualify at check-in.
You must enter and exit through one of the 60 eligible ports (up from 39 before the expansion), spread across 24 provinces. Every gateway Americans actually fly into — Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu — is covered, so the port rule rarely trips up a U.S. traveler on a normal international itinerary. Staying inside the approved areas is the part to check: three provinces (Anhui, Hainan, and Guizhou) are open in their entirety, while most others are limited to designated cities or zones.
Your passport needs at least 3 months' validity.
What you can do during those 10 days: tourism, business meetings, exchange visits, and visiting family are all explicitly permitted. What you can't: work, study, or news reporting — those require a proper visa approved in advance, no matter how short the stay.
One genuinely useful improvement over the old rules: you can now travel across provinces within the approved areas, instead of being locked to the region you landed in. A common American use case: fly into Beijing, take the high-speed rail to Shanghai, and fly out to Tokyo or Seoul — all under a single transit stay, no visa needed.
Here's the catch for most of our clients: the typical American trip to China is a round trip — and a round trip is not a transit. The visa-free rule does not apply if:
China is your destination (a round trip like US → China → US — you're not transiting onward).
You want to travel outside the approved areas, or stay longer than 240 hours.
You're entering at a port the policy doesn't cover.
In those cases you need a regular L (tourist) visa, obtained before you travel.
For most U.S. travelers whose trip is to China (not just passing through), the 240-hour transit doesn't apply — you need a visa. If you're genuinely continuing to a third country and meet every condition, you may skip it. When in doubt, the safe move is the visa.
