Day-to-day China runs on phones, not wallets. Street food, taxis, museums, vending machines — nearly everything is paid by scanning a QR code through Alipay or WeChat Pay, and plenty of small merchants don't keep much change for cash. The good news for U.S. travelers: both apps now accept American cards, and China's own Payment & Clearing Association publishes an official guide on exactly how visitors should set this up — a 19-page PDF the Chinese Consulate distributes. Here's the whole thing, decoded, plus the honest advice the official guide won't give you.
First things first though: none of this matters without a visa in your passport. If that part isn't done yet, our China visa service handles it start to finish.
Set up Alipay before you fly, link your U.S. Visa or Mastercard to it, carry a small amount of RMB cash as backup — and you're covered for essentially everything. The rest of this guide is the detail.

Worth noticing: per the official guide, American Express links to WeChat Pay but isn't on Alipay's list — if Amex is your only card, set up WeChat Pay. Most travelers do fine with Alipay alone; locals often use WeChat Pay for everything because they're already in WeChat all day.
Download Alipay from the App Store or Google Play — at home, on hotel Wi-Fi speeds you'll appreciate later.
Register with your U.S. phone number. No Chinese number needed.
Add your card: tap "Add Credit or Debit Card," enter the number, done. International cards are accepted in-app.
Paying works both directions: tap Scan to scan the merchant's QR code, or tap Pay/Receive to show your own code for the cashier to scan. Small shops usually have a printed code taped to the counter; bigger stores scan you.
WeChat Pay works the same way (register, then Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards to add a card; the + button top-right has Scan and Money). One nice detail from the official guide: for transactions under a certain amount, no ID information is required — small tourist purchases just work.
Sometimes. Cards with UnionPay, Visa, or Mastercard logos are accepted where the logo is displayed at checkout — hotels, department stores, chains aimed at international visitors. UnionPay cards work at every merchant POS terminal in the mainland. But a huge share of everyday merchants — the noodle shop, the taxi, the market stall — take mobile payment only, or mobile-and-cash. Treat your physical card as a hotel-and-big-store tool, not a daily driver.
At the airport: ATMs at ports of entry take international cards and dispense RMB; currency-exchange counters and self-service machines are right there too.
In the city: banks, some hotels, and kiosks with the green "EXCHANGE 货币兑换" sign change money.
Leaving: you can convert leftover RMB back to dollars downtown or at your departure port — don't feel pressure to spend it down to zero.
A few hundred RMB in cash covers you for the rare mobile-payment outage, a dead phone battery, or the one stall whose QR code won't cooperate.
Two things from the official guide most tourists can skip, but worth knowing exist: you can open a Chinese bank account with just your passport at major banks (ICBC, Bank of China, ABC, CCB, BOCOM) — relevant for students and long-term work stays. And China's central-bank digital currency, e-CNY, has its own app that works in pilot cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen-area Guangdong, and Chengdu-area Sichuan — a curiosity for most visitors, not a necessity.
Install Alipay (and WeChat if you're an Amex holder), register, link a card, and confirm the card shows as active.
Tell your bank you're traveling — a fraud-flagged card inside Alipay fails at the worst moment.
Plan to withdraw or exchange a few hundred RMB at the airport.
File your Digital Arrival Card in the 72 hours before departure.
